Auto-Join When Offline

The menu, working. Try it.

Built for the job that runs overnight.

Power assertions alone can't stop a MacBook from sleeping when the lid closes. Awake handles that part properly, then gets out of the way. Pick 15, 30 or 45 minutes, 1, 4, 8 or 12 hours, or forever, and it switches itself off when time is up.

The screen is allowed to sleep by default to save power; turn on “Also Keep Display Awake” when you need it lit. One checkbox starts it at login. Choose your phone's hotspot once and, when Wi-Fi drops mid-job, Awake re-joins it so the work keeps going.

Switch it off or quit and sleep goes back to normal immediately. Your Mac never gets stuck sleepless. With the lid closed the machine is still running, so give it airflow and don't put it in a bag.

Installing it

  1. Download, unzip, drag Awake to Applications, open it. It's notarized by Apple, so it opens with a double-click.
  2. Approve one admin prompt. macOS only lets an admin stop a laptop sleeping when the lid closes, so Awake asks once and installs a rule that allows exactly two commands to run without a password from then on: turning that sleep block on, and off. Nothing else. Skip it and Awake still works with the lid open.
  3. Forget about it. A coffee cup in the menu bar; click it to toggle, set a timer, or choose a hotspot.

The rule lives at /etc/sudoers.d/awake-pmset. Delete that file and the prompt comes back next time.
